Negative ammeter reading

Negative Ammeter Reading

I installed one of the big cooling fans on the radiator. It puts out a lot of air but unfortunately, it causes the amp guage to read in the minus all the time. Doesn't this lead to a dead battery is a short time? Any suggestions on a better way to wire it? Right now it is connected directly to the ignition so when the key is turned on, the fan goes on. There is an in-line 30 amp fuse. Thanks. Aloha Rob Caveny, XK-140 FHC

Rob I have had a similar problem although I did install an alternator along with some other alterations. Unfortunately even with the alternator it struggles with the load of the large fan, especially when the new original wiring loom consumed most of the higher output in getting to the battery. This has subsequently been changed by a more direct line from alternator to the battery (although this bypasses the ammeter). If I drive on hot nights in stop start traffic the battery does need an occasional topping up but my overheating problems are behind me as long as there is not too much stop light cruising in the heat of the day. - Bruce Lake
