150 Door Hinges and Check-straps

150 Door Hinges and Check-straps

I am keen to get some more feedback from XK150 owners about whether the doors of their cars have: (1) hinges that are straight cut (usually early cars, but also a few very late cars), or hinges that are moulded looking; (2) check straps on the doors (to stop them opening too wide) - early cars seem not to have had them, but all later cars did. I am particularly interested to hear whether the earlier straight hinges ever came with check straps, or whether they were only introduced with the moulded hinges. All contributions, as ever, gratefully received. - Regards, John Elmgreen

John; My 150 has check straps, cast (moulded) type door hinges, and did not have the "mystery" heat shields. Its numbers are as follows: S837859, V5866-8, JL42497JS, P7121. It was made on 26 November 1958 and was delivered in Tucson, Arizona on 2/6/59 to R.D.Nordstrom. - Ron Gaeta

Hi John & all -- my dear friend Bob Carnachan in Sonoma CA owns S835272 BW, a mostly original '58 XK150 DHC -- he has what appear to be moulded hinges (no straight cut), with NO check straps. Hope this helps -- Larry Martz

John, I believe that my 150 DHC #838839 has what you have described as straight cut hinges, and check straps. The vehicle was registered in 1961. - Bill Burke

Bill Burke: Your late 150 DHC is interesting as it had the straight cut hinges and the check strap. This agrees with Terry McGrath's theory (see Jag World) that later cars went back to the straight hinges. Have not yet found any with the moulded hinges and no check strap. - Regards, John Elmgreen
