Checking U-joints

Doug Dwyer

As far as U-joints being "OK" because there is no "play" in them....well, that's not a very good test. A UJ is only going to have "play" when they are 99% destroyed and about ready to drop out. I've replaced many, many UJ's that appeared good from the outside, so to speak, with no play or obvious defect BUT when disassembled they were dry, needle bearings shot, and bearing surfaces on cross-shafts badly galled. They only way to tell is to remove, or partially remove, the shaft and "feel" the action of the UJ. If you've ever felt a nice, new, smooth UJ you'll be able to discern a binding, dried out, no-damn-good- anymore UJ in an instant.

A big Thank You to those who have donated already!
