Adjusting Backup Lamp Switch, Series III XJ6

Adjusting Backup Lamp Switch, Series III XJ6

Doug Dwyer

Jaguar apparently never revised the Repair Operations Manual when they moved the backup lamp switch from the console to the side of the transmission. Here's the adjustment procedure.

Turn the key to "on" and select "reverse". The gear selector has some play so, while maintaining your selection of reverse, leave the gearshift in the midway area of the reverse gate; that is, not against either the forward or rearward detent.

Now, working under the (suitable and safely elevated) car, take your 8 mm wrench and loosen the small bolt at the bottom of the back-up lamp switch (left side of the transmission, several wires attached). You'll now notice that the switch can be rotated in a small arc, a few degrees in either direction. Simply move the switch back-n-forth a bit and you'll find the sweet spot where the back-up lamps will come on. I say "sweet spot" because the lamps will stay illuminated as the switch travels a few degrees thru the arc. You want to find the mid-point of the range which closes the circuit. With the gear shift at it's mid-range in the gate and the switch at the mid-point of it's range, the lamps should come on without hesitation whenever reverse is selected.....with no jiggling or other antics required. Tighten the bolt, recheck operation ....and all's well.
