Correct Transmission Cooler Hoses

Correct Transmission Cooler Hoses

Blackwell, Dwyer

Walter Arkesteijn writes:

Hi all, I want to replace the hoses that run towards and from the automatic transmission. I assume ATF is flowing trough those hoses. my question is: Can I use a standard FUEL HOSE or a WATER HOSE. To me a fuel hose sounds like a better choice because this type of hose is more likely to be resistant to the AT Fluid. But the waterhose I bought seems thicker and looks more like the original (dried out) hose? Can I use the waterhose??? Or must I use some kind of special ATF hose? Is there a high pressure on these hoses? Greetings & thank you all out front

From Art Blackwell:

You should use ATF certified hose as the fluid temperature going into the trans cooler can get quite high under heavy use! There is not much pressure in the cooler lines itself. I usually find the car parts stores here have cooler line either in rolls or a kit that has 6-10' with new clamps.

From Doug Dwyer:

Walter, your local parts house should have actual transmission or hydraulic type hose. Fuel line is OK in a pinch (like a temporary repair) but I don't recommend it. It won't stand up to the heat and breaks down, sending little bits of debris into your transmission. Water hose ? I don't think so.
