Series 3 Mirror Control Rebuild

Series 3 Mirror Control Rebuild

Craig Van Steenburgh

Enough people out there appear to have the same problem with their mirrors. Here is the procedure that I followed to rebuild them.

  1. Remove the switches from the door.
  2. Disconnect the wiring harnesses. You might have to cut some wire ties if the switches have not been removed before.
  3. Remove each switch from bezel (one small allen head screw for each one)
  4. Push 3 of the 4 brass pins out from the top using a nail or similar object. The 4th one does not go all the way through so either you will have to make a hole in the switch or else do as I did and pull the 4th pin out using a pair of wirecutters.
  5. The switch will separate into 3 small sections.
  6. In the part with the wires attached you just need to clean up the 5 round connections and the inside of the thin brass circle part. I used steel wool and a small screwdriver, but you can use a solvent or even sandpaper.
  7. On the part with the control handle, you need to pull out the 4 small brass contacts and springs (you can leave the springs in if you want). Clean off these contacts until shiny.
  8. I reassembled the two main parts and tested all the contacts with a continuity tester. Each wire in the group of four needs to be able to connect to the red and black when the switch is moved into the correct position.
  9. When all the contacts were working properly I put the switches back together and reinstalled the pins. May need to use some pliers to push the pins all the way back in.

Feel free to contact me if you run into problems. Two days later and mine are still working!
