Fiber Optics

G'day Chip (God, there's an American name!)

Re your fiber Optics, it sounds like a loose earth wire or the globe is loose in the F/O unit.

Remove your center console and you will see a cylindrical device behind your transmission selector. It will have numerous fiber optic leads coming from it and heading into the dash. There is a power lead and an earth going to the globe holder. Trace these and check for shorts. If this is ok, then suspect the globe. If it is an original, the material surrounding the base of the globe may have broken down, giving an intermittent earth to the system.

They are bastards to undo, so just pry the holder loose at the rear with a small flat blade screwdriver and it will come out easily. Replace the globe and hopefully your worries are over.

I've been there-done that!
