AC Amplifier Replacement

AC Amplifier Replacement

Brent Smith

The A/C amplifier is located on the transmission hump behind the dash. Access is by removing the left side kick panel (has the footwell vent). There is a good description of removal procedure in the factory manual. I just did it. A little patience and manual dexterity helps, but it is not hard. It goes roughly like this:

  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Remove the kick panel cover.
  3. Disconnect the amplifier wiring (multi-conductor cable plug and black fuse connection wire.
  4. Remove the two screws holding the blower relay in place.
  5. Remove the mounting screw for the vacuum solenoid (bracket is on the rear of the blower relay.
  6. By gently holding the blower relay and vacuum solenoid aside, you can get at the AC amplifier. It is mounted in a spring clip and should pop out and then (with a little juggling) work out through the blower relay mounting bracket.
  7. Replacement is a reversal of the above steps.

The adjustment pot is used to calibrate the temperature knob setting. I set the temperature knob at 75 and then drive the car until it stabilizes and check the temperature with a thermometer near the interior temperature sensor. If the actual temperature is under 75, turn the trimpot screw clockwise (and vice-versa). Supposedly five degrees is about an eighth of a turn on the trimpot.

Good luck!
