These cars were produced from 1968 to 1987 in XJ6 form and until 1992 as the XJ12. If your XJ6 was made after 1987, or your XJ12 after 1992, you are not on the right page - you have an XJ40 or X300; these cars are very different from the ones discussed here, and you need to go to the Moderns subsite.
