Description: My '89 XJS quit running while idling at a signal, wouldn't restart, had to get tow; diagnosis was V12 ignition amplifier, bolted atop the left cyl head. Jag part# DAC2673 up to serial 127025, DAC 4104 to serial 157117 (difference seems to be connectors). Price is $250 to $500+, depending on vendor.

Description: This is what is inside the amplifier. It contains a GM HEI amplifier for V8's of the 1970's, a condensor, and some other components encased in a white rubber blob. Kirby's book says they can be successfully repaired. Opening the unit is easy: just remove 4 screws on the bottom cover.

Description: First step is to remove and test the GM ignition amplifier; this diagram shows how. It is also possible that a local auto parts store may have the ability to check the amplifer; ask them.

Description: This is the amplifier I chose as the replacement, but there are other GM V8 amplifiers that may work just as well. Apply thermal paste between the GM amplifer and the cast aluminum case (may be provided with the GM amplifier). Caveat: some aftermarket GM amplifiers are notorious for failing.
