Body Restoration, Ryan's 1959 MK1

Body Restoration
1959 Jaguar MK1

Here is what the car looked like shortly after I purchased it. It was missing the front bumper, and the grille was removed to try and straighten it (it was eventually replaced). This picture was taken outside of a glass shop, who attempted to re-install the windshield with a new gasket. They managed to break my windshield which is why it is also missing in this picture.
This picture was also taken before my conversion to right hand drive.

Things have to get worse before they get better. Here the chemical stripping of the paint has just begun. The previous owner laid a thick coat of paint down that would have made Earl Scheib proud. It looked terrible, was virtually impossible to strip, but protected the car (including most of the chrome) quite well.

About 1/2 stripped here.

The right rear quarter-panel had sustained the worst collision damage. There was quite literally 1/2 inch of bondo here, backed with what appeared to be wood grain laminate shelving. In preparation for the new paint, this area was beat out properly.

Here's the nose, almost ready for paint.

Those are the doors on the stands in front of the car. All 4 lower skins, AND all 4 bottoms (horizontal surface) had to be repaired with new metal. These cars are especially susceptible to rust there.

Back home in my driveway. The car is a very interesting color... in the shade, and admittedly in many of the pictures at this site, it looks black. In the sun, it takes on a definite British Racing Green. We started with stock Jaguar British Racing Green, and just kept adding black until it started to get muddy. From there we backed off just a bit, and shot the car.

The final product.
