Front Suspension

 Front Suspension

AND

Converting to LHD

I decided to do the front suspension at first.
Al the rubbers where dry and the steering unit was leaking.
After dropping the front suspension (beaware its very heavy) a first gave it a good clean which a high compression water cleaner.
I decided to convert the car to LHD and magened to get a LHD steeringbox and almost new steering arms.
Replaced all rubbers and the balljoint (maintenance free ones) with new ones.
After a good clean of all components i painted them with special rustprotecting black paint.
The heavy part were the front springs, it was a pain to get them fitted.
Later I discovered tha the steeringbox was leaking heavely, so I removed is agian but now with the subframe in place.
When I dismanteled the steeringbox I saw that there were only 32 balls inside instead of 36.
At least the old box came handy for the missing balls.I replaced the leakingseal (one with 2 O rings) with a new
rubber seal from an old type steeringbox. It fitted quit well and tight and the leaking was over.

I olso wanted to do something about the brakes.
When I saw the brake-pads of the original brakes they had the same size as the brakes-pads of my wifes Nissan Micra and that for a car of 1630Kg.
So I fitted new Upgraded brakes (4 pinton jaguar) with heavier Discs(1/4").
Cleaned up the Master BrakeCylinder and replaced the rubbers and Hoses.
Then installed it on the left, with a new longer brake pipe and cleaned up reservoir.

With the help of a friend I remounted the front Subframe .
Now the dash (see interior section)en steering has to be moved to the left.
Finaly remounting the steering columm ofcource with new rubbers.

CONVERTING TO LHD

Mechanical it  is not really difficcult to change from right to left.
Just move the steering wheel and the pedalbox to the left.
(only one paddel in my case, its an automatic)
The paddel had to be bended in the right possition, I took it to a metalhardware specialist.
He had olso done the welding of the GasPadel link on the passthroughbar (its there only on the automatic for the govener link) of the padel and the mirroring of the handbrake mchanism. The handbrake mechanism om the Rear Axel olso have to be switched around.
Ofcource I had to get a LHD dashboard, I found one but the was no veneer left on it.So first I restored this
The really hard part is the Autobox mechanism and the electrical wiring.
For The Autobox Mechanish it is handy to put every in the same way as on the right side.
You have to drill a view holes, but the cable and mechanism can stay the same.
For the wiring I just removed all the closh surroundings and moved everythink to the left.
You olso have to miror th central part of the dashbord (all buttons and clocks have to be switched)
Only 2 wires were to short the rest was to long (Looks like LHD is default).
For the Brake Fluid reservoir (Which was moved to the left) I took some new wires.

New Thicker Discs       Complete with Wheels

Improved Handeling

Later to improve handeling I made some modifications to the front suspension.
It started with new shocks and tires.
As they already mensioned in the archives i to turned around the upper A-arm mountings. And adjusted camber , castor and toe-in.
In the book "S-TYPE AND 420 The complete Story" the is a picture off the front suspention with the upper A-arm mountings already upsidedown
