Rhett's Maintenance Log Winter 99 - 00

You asked yesterday about the maintenance log for RHETT's Winter '99 - '00 Project -- here it is, from the start on 24 Oct. '99 to yesterday:
 *****
RHETT'S WINTER '99 - '00 PROJECT
(Maintenance Log)
(RHETT is my Jaguar Mk IX saloon, 792817 BW, engine # NC8338-9, manufactured 15 December '59, despatched 28 December '59, unrestored
original, Cornish grey/mist grey, grey interior.)

10/24/99, mil. 123,220
Winter '99 - '00 Project, to repair damage from 6/99 overheat -- drained all fluids, stripped engine, removed cylinder head (Bill Geerts, Bruce Dunow helped), removed sump, ordered new standard Vandervell main, conrod, cam bearings from John Kubasak at British Vintages.  Removed pistons, discovered rods re-numbered 1-2-3-4-5-6 front to rear, rather than factory 6-5-4-3-2-1.  Pistons 3 and 2 replaced by PO with AE (England) instead of original Bricos -- done by 1st or 2nd owner peior to my acquisition

2/24/89, mil. 83,009.  Pistons 6 and 5 partially collapsed by summer '99 overheat, pinching oil control rings.  Reset trip odometer to 000.0 for
accurate documentation of engine mileage on work.

1/15/00
Bruce Brown, Fred Gerischer, Larry Jackson helped in diagnosis -- Bruce:
overheat caused by distributor weights snagging, redarding timing, resultant coolant loss -- fixed -- at recommendations from them plus saloons and xk-engine list, ordered 6 new pistons from AE, England, 20615 KR, STD, 9:1 -- also ordered 12 new conrod bolts and self-locking nuts to get rid of cottar pins, all from John at BV.  All bores honed to remove damage, all installed by 1/1/00, non-original conrod #s (1-2-3-4-5-6) redone to original #s (6-5-4-3-2-1).  NO damage to cylinder head -- head reinstalled, all ancillaries re-installed by 1/15/00.

1/16/00
With Harry Leisk's help, primed oil filter assembly, 10 qts of Castrol GTX 20w-50, filled cooling system with H20, spun engine on solenoid to pre-lube
bearings, installed 6 new Champion RN12YC sparking plugs.  Ignition on, pushed the button -- he started IMEMEDIATELY, 800 RPM (starting
carburettor his), after 1 1/2 minutes, magnet clicked, to 500 RPM.  A funny noise -- we shut down.  About 2 hours later, started again -- funny noise less.  Ran
to 70 degrees c, reset carburettors.

1/18/00
Started for Bruce Brown to analyze -- funny noise had disappeared -- Bruce heard a little piston slap, which will go away when new rings are seated -- oscillation in upper chain -- took adjuster two teeth clockwise, went away.

1/19/00, mil. 123,235 (engine 015.1)
Drained cooling system, Prestone SuperFlush, refilled with H20 -- drove 5 miles to petrol station, filled both tanks.  Back home, drained cooling system again, reverse flushed to get all flush, etc. out, refilled with Prestone, distilled H20, Watter Wetter.  A badly needed bath -- drove on dryout route -- he ran fine.  Right SU fuel pump dripping -- installed new fiber gaskets, new rubber line -- still dripping, so clamped off with small vice-grips.  New fan belt installed.

1/29/00, mil. 123,298 (engine 078.4)
Drove to Bill Geerts' in Rocklin using breakin info from owner's manual (2,500 RPM max for first 1,000 miles) -- 68 c all the way up and down, 40 PSI at 2,000 RPM all the way -- Tour of Rocklin with Bill's wife Sue, small girls -- another 78 miles on the break-in schedule -- he's running perfectly.

2/2/00, mil. 123,298 (engine 078.4)
Replaced leaking RH SU fuel pump with Facet.  Renewed fuel lines to both Facet pumps, new clips.  Drained coolant, moved radiator up 2", made proper connection to overflow pipe for coolant recovery bottle with 5/16" ID neoprene line, with clip to hold.

2/6/00, mil. 123,391 (engine 171.3)
Sunny day!  To Bill Geerts', Bruce Dunow's -- he ran perfectly, 68 c all the way -- now 171.3 miles on new (internally) engine.  Bruce Brown says ignore owner's manual break-in schedule because block is well seasoned, and drive normally so he'll break in that way!  Every so often, go to 3,800 - 4,000 RPM and back off, so rtings will seat that way.

2/10/00, mil. 123,391 (engine 171.3)
Complete chassis lube, 16 nipples, including wheel bearings.  Starter button decided to DNF (fortunately at home!).

2/11 - 15/00, mil. 123,391 (engine 171.3)
Starter button, in-gear starter inhibitor removed from 791118 BW (Mk IX for spares) -- disassembled, cleaned, mounted -- a fight with connectors but successful!

2/17/00, mil. 123,405 (engine 185.4)
Another wash -- drove to dry -- began needed wax job.

2/19/00, mil. 123,407 (engine 187.5)
Started for Bill Geerts' -- oil pressure suddenly to 0!  Called CSAA, home on flatbed, started, no oil flow to LH cam.  Bruce Brown said remove oil filter assembly, check pressure release valve, drain & remove sump, check oil pump to distributor drive connection.

2/21 - 3/21/00, mil. 123,438 (engine 218.6)
Sump off -- discovered the funny noise was oil suction pipe (sump to pump) being clipped by RH connecting rod bolt, #5 -- it went through at 123,405 (engine 185.4) -- pipe pushed up by screen at sump bottom -- oil back to sump, so no pressure.  With Bill Geerts' help, removed pump, suction and delivery pipes from 791118 BW -- replaced suction pipe (insuring that pipe NOT moved by screen), 12 qts Castrol 20w-50, drove, now 22 PSI at 2,000 RPM.  Bruce Brown said new main, conrod bearings trashed by no oil pressure
-- change them again.  Ordered new (again) from John at BV, did so.  Warm -- oil pressure now at 53 PSI at 2,000 -- turned pressure release valve
back 2 1/2 turns, now 43 PSI at 2,000.

3/23/00, mil. 123,443 (engine 222.7)
To petrol station for fillup, prep for SJC tech session Sat. 3/25/00 -- he's running fine!

3/25/00, mil. 123,454 (engine 234.2)
To SJC tech session -- he ran perfectly, 68 c all the way, 43 PSI at 2,000 all the way.

3/27 - 4/21/00, mil. 123,465 (engine 244.6)
Starter motor DNF (fortunately at home).  Out, diagnosed, internal electrical fault, tried to fix but no good -- Bill Geerts found a correct, rebuilt starter -- got here 4/20/00, in 4/21, running correctly again!
Also -- had assembled distributor drive 180 degrees out, forcing wiring change -- with Bruce Brown's guidance, removed both cams, turned engine so drive moved 180 degrees, back to correct.  Also replaced cam bearings with new (athough old ones still looked fine).  Took compression check, cold,
throttles closed:  #6, 179 -- #5, 177 -- #4, 187 -- #3, 175 -- #2, 192 -- #1, 197.

Sorry this is so bloody long, but as a "detail" person, this is the way I
document RHETT.  Use this as you wish.

With 3,644.2 miles on the newly done NC8338-9, oil consumption has dropped to nil, meaning the new AE pistons and rings are seated correctly!
RHETT's (and my) next major venue is Sep. 22/23/01, the 23rd Annual Chico (CA) Concours d' Elegance, "Celebrating the Automobile as Art".

Re:  Photos -- I shot several, but shipped them to Mike Cook, Editor of the JCNA JAGUAR JOURNAL, who used them in a piece he called "Renewing Rhett" in the Nov/Dec. 2000 JAGUAR JOURNAL.  These were shot in colour, but came out in B&W in Mike's mag -- if you can use them, send your snailmail and I'll send you the issue.

Take care my Jaguar friend -- Larry
