Thu, 10 Jul 1997 MkIX -auto-trans I guess my questions here will suit many of the auto-trans on XK motors.. We have had steady but not diabolical leaks of fluid from the transmission. They all emanate from the extension case area. After much arm twisting and skinned knuckles I tightened (but not strained) up any bolts nuts and plates I could reach. I wiped down the whole thing and left it for a day (cold). next day I find drips on the floor, there is definitely laekage from the intermediate speed hold solenoid housing, the speedo gear housing and from around the rear oil pump casing where it bolts onto the case. The manual says the extension casing can be removed from the gearbox without having to take out the motor and gearbox. It does say however, "take care not to allow gears and rings (or similar) to fall out". I can cope with disconnecting linkages, bolts, propshafts etc but am in fear of having springs, gears and seals fall out from places from which I cannot see how they were placed! I also do not have any "special" alignment or extraction tools which might not have been mentioned are needed to replace the case afterwards. I would like to renew gaskets, copper washers etc on all the attached gizmos etc, on the casing to stem the leaks. I see that the int. speed hold control solenoid feeds through bellows -these, I think are leaking (same on our MkII as well - the speed hold isn;t working either). The manual seems to show that the bellows can't be removed without dismantling the internals. is this right? Has anyone (Larry?) done a de-leaking operation on the extension case? We have a good supplier of gaskets etc locally (they even had *original* Joseph Lucas springs for our starter motor) and I guess I could (but don't wish to) use gasket goo or equivalent if I can avoid it. Guidance appreciated. ** Incidentally, my ego boosting *fix* on the starboard fuel pump was ill-fated. The pump now works only intermittently - embarrassing in town as you try and glide away from the lights, frantically switching to the port tank! ** Windscreen washer vacuum pump - with 2 identical (knackered) units I will attempt a dismantling operation on one to see if I can repair the other without destroying it.
