The car had about 70,000 miles on it and had been dismantled in 1974. The previous owner had started to rebuild it but then abandoned the project. The interior was also stripped out (what was left of it) and the car was piled high inside and out with plastic bags and cardboard boxes; nothing was bagged or labelled. This was my first "Jaguar experience" and was quite a puzzle. To add to the challenge, this "kit" included numerous unidentified bonus parts from miscellaneous other Jaguars. As I didn't have a garage at the time (and still don't - the car is parked with a neighbour), I was able to rebuild individual components, including the engine, at home but I had to reassemble the car in a garage I rented from a little old lady several miles away. I paid a restoration specialist to restore the bodywork (they ground out all the PO's filler, replaced his brazed patches with welded steel, removed rusted sections, trued the panels and painted the car), and I had a transmission shop rebuild the transmission. Nearly everything else I managed to do myself. I couldn't have done it without the illustrated Spare Parts Catalogue, and the understanding owner of a well-restored example a few miles away who gave me access on demand to see how things should be assembled. Would I do it again? Bt the time I'd got it back on the road....no! Now, after the memories have faded and the wounds have healed....yes (but not until I have better facilities and my wife's written authorization). Martyn
