Title: Jaguar E-Type Six Cylinder Restoration and Originality Guide ZZHAD 24.00

Author: Dr. Thomas F. Haddock

Publisher: Motorbooks International, Osceola, WI, USA 1991 ISBN:

Format: Slightly oversize, paperback, 224 pages, about 400 b&w photos

This is an exhaustive examination of E-Type minutiae, for the serious restorer. All six cylinder cars are addressed (12's are in a later edition). System by system, in meticulous detail, the 'correct' characteristics of each component are described, and photographically recorded, if possible. This is the best source of detailing information I have seen for any car. The cars photographed are clearly untouched originals, and a bit of grunginess is tolerated in the interest of accuracy. This book is what Porter's 'Original Jaguar E-Type' wants to be, but isn't. A must have book for any E-type restorer.

However, things get less clear when Haddock tries to track dates for changes by serial number. I have found that they should be taken as only guide lines. For example, my car is 875299 an early LHD 1961 OTS. Haddock lists it in his book on page 16 as the last car to have the original chrome finisher at the top of the doors as a change that took place about October 1961. However, the 2 certificates I have for the car from the JDHC list it's DOB (build date) as 26 July 1961. I tend to acccept the JDHC date as the correct one. Don't get me wrong. I think Haddock's books are great and contain a lot of valuable information. However, I think the dates for changes are only guide lines built from the information provided at the time. Craig
