Restoration Reference Books

A must for the person looking to restore their E-Type, since these types of books give information on how to judge a car's authenticity and restore it to it's original appearance. These books do not, however, contain any shop information or maintenance tips so should be used in conjunction with the appropriate Shop Manuals.

"Jaguar E-Type Six-Cylinder Restoration & Originality Guide" (ISBN 0-87938-516-2 )

authored by Dr. Thomas F. Haddock (published 1991) and printed by Motorbooks International in Osceola, WI (USA). Commonly available through Amazon.com. A very handy book with many photos showing original components for the Series 1, 1.5, and 2 XK-Es. A must for any person wanting to restore their E-Type. Only drawback is that all photos are in black and white and the book does not read well. Approx 224 pages.

"Original Jaguar E-Type" (ISBN 1-870979-12-5)

authored by Philip Porter (first published 1990 and reprinted in '92, '94, and '96) by Bay View Books Ltd in Bideford, Devon England.

Also commonly available through Amazon.com. A MUST HAVE. Fantastic book with tons of facts and a bunch of excellent color photos. Not only is it an excellent resource for a restoration project, it is so well done that it can even double as a coffee table book after the restoration. Not a complete in detailed photos as the book by Haddock. Reads well. Approx. 96 pages.

 Shop Manuals

These are technical manuals. Usually they have drawings instead of nice photos, but have lots of specifications. Unless you are a mechanic prodigy, you need one of these manuals to successfully fix and maintain an E-type. If you want to restore your E-Type to its former glory, you also need a Restoration Reference book with one of these (preferably the Shop manual).

"Jaguar Operating, Maintenance and Service Handbook" (ISBN 1 869826 388 for the 4.2L)

Published by Jaguar and out of print. Original manual with the car.

Tough to get but got mine through Amazon.com. A very light weight driver's handbook. Totally unnecessary if you purchase the full Service manual. However, a nice touch of authenticity for your car if you want. Approx. 82 pages.

Varies but approx. $20

"Jaguar E-Type Models, 3.8 and 4.2 Litre Service Manual" (ISBN 1 85520 0201)

Published by Jaguar and out of print.

Tough to get but got mine through Amazon.com. A heavy book full of everything you would want to know on fixing and maintaining your Jaguar Series 1, 1.5, or 2. There is a shop manual for the Series III also. If you can only afford to buy one book, make it this one. A MUST for maintaining your car. Approx. 1,000 pages.

Varies but approx $75

"Jaguar Spare Parts Catalogue for Jaguar 4.2 "E" Type" (ISBN 1 870642 112)

Published by Jaguar and out of print.

Still available through various sources. A nice reference guide for part numbers. However, most vendors are more sophisticated now and have software that will identify the part for you like Terry's Jaguar. Still a handy book with nice blow-ups of the various parts. Approx. 285 pages.

Varies but approx $50

"SU Carburetors - Owners Workshop Manual" (ISBN 1 85010 589 8)

Published by Haynes Publishing Group in Somerset England in 1989

Excellent book to have to tune your SU carburetors, which were on the Series I and some of the Series 1.5s. However, non-existant. I have been waiting for my backordered copy from Amazon.com since Dec. 1997. Borrow one off a friend if you can. Approx. 118 pages.

Coffee Table Books

These are non-technical manuals meant for the coffee table. Usually all color photos and slightly oversized, these books will command admiration from your visitors as you describe how yours will look like that someday. Not the kind of book to buy if you are looking to start a restoration project as they will make you sick with envy
